6 Interior Design Trends for 2021

Written by Carmen Mackey

We thought about doing a rewind and looking back on 2020 trends, but we ultimately decided it’s best to just move on! We knew you would agree. So, what about 2021?

Today we are starting off the new year by diving into 6 trends that you will see in 2021, and which ones you should pay attention to!

Multifunctional Spaces

Multifunctional spaces. Just because 2020 is behind us, doesn’t mean we are out of the woods yet, and honestly who knows when that will be? We will most likely still be in our homes for more than the normal amount in 2021. Which means, working from home, cooking at home, and even just living everyday life. Our homes will need to be functional, and withstand everything our everyday lives throw at them.

But what does that ultimately mean?

We plan to see more performance fabrics, more durable furnishings, and in some cases – a big change in the space planning of our homes. Now that we’ve been in our homes for a good amount of time, it may be a good idea to take a look at each room in your home and think about how things could be changed to work better for your everyday life. Maybe that’s finally cleaning out the den and making it into a movie room, or turning the guest room into a functioning office.

What I like to do is, make a list of all the activities that you do within a week. This includes work, homeschooling, playtime, tv time, etc. Next, make a list of all the activities you do within one month, that is not on the first list. This could include, your monthly book club or girl’s night.

Once you have that completed; go down the list and make sure that your house is functional for everything on the first list. If there are multiple things on your list that your current setup is not working for, it’s time to rethink things. Your monthly list is the second priority and should come after everything on your first list.

Give it a try and let us know how it goes!

Warm Earthy Colors

At the end of 2020 we noticed a huge shift in the way colors are being used in the home, and we only expect this to continue into 2021. Instead of grays and whites, we are starting to notice bolder colors used in unique ways. We are also noticing more browns and earthy tones used throughout the home. This includes deep greens, deep blues, browns, and rich caramel and rust colors. This shift will be a slow one as more people transition into this trend, and will probably happen over multiple years.

We’ve already seen a big change in the wood tones and colors our vendors are putting out, and it showcases at our yearly markets. We plan on going into more detail on the colors of 2021 in a future blog, so stay tuned!

Natural Materials

Another new trend in 2021 is the use of natural materials. This includes the use of wicker, reclaimed wood, plants, seagrass, and even materials like bamboo! We are very excited about this trend, as it adds the possibility for a lot of texture in our designs. The use of natural materials also brings nature into the home, which gives your space a warm, calm, and inviting feel.

The use of layering textures will bring your space new life.

Natural materials such as these, are extremely versatile and can be implemented into a wide variety of design styles. They offer organic shapes and forms that can really shape the room and draw your eye around a space.

Liveable Luxury

It’s no surprise that people are spending more time in their homes now. Which brings on the need (and want) for higher quality furnishings. The pieces we put in our home need to be able to withstand our everyday lives at home. The past few months, we’ve had a huge spike in the request for higher-end furniture, and we understand why.

This also includes the need for more durable fabrics and woods that will withstand everyday life. That sofa that was once never used, is now the family trampoline, the reading nook, and the Netflix binging designation.

Our clients are realizing that shopping smart is the way to go and investing in pieces that will last.

Less Clutter

The past 10 years have been all about the farmhouse trend. This trend is traditionally done with lots and lots of.. STUFF. As we notice the farmhouse trend start to evolve out of what it once was; we are noticing cleaner more minimal spaces.

We are noticing more open brighter spaces that showcase bits and pieces of farmhouse, but ultimately leave out most of the overwhelming accessorizing that can be harsh to the eye. In our opinion, this leaves a cleaner and more modern updated look – and we’re a fan.

A Touch of Traditional

We are noticing that 2021 is bringing in more eclectic styles that bring in a touch of vintage and traditional. This is fairly new but has recently caught a lot of traction as people are starting to appreciate the art of mixing styles.

This has the option to start bringing in pops of color and unexpected elements into our designs. We are very curious to see how this will evolve throughout 2021.
