How To Choose Patterned Furnishings & Accessories

Looking for an easy way to freshen up the look and feel of your home? Incorporate patterns! Playing with patterns in your home design can be terrifying, but with the right decorating tricks, you’ll become a pattern mixing pro. Discover how to properly pair patterns and conquer your decorating fears with these tips.

  • Strike a balance. If there’s a bold print that you love, surround it with other patterns that are smaller in scale, tone-on-tone, or a solid color to reach the perfect harmony. Using large, bold patterns doesn’t mean that everything else in the room needs to feature a solid or subtle pattern to play it down. Instead, opt for balance. If you have an accent chair that features a bulky pattern, balance it out by placing throw pillows with a smaller pattern on a solid couch opposite the chairs.
  • Choose a monotone theme. For those homeowners who fear the use of a pattern, incorporate depth and texture into a space through monotone mixing. This is achieved by mixing 3 or 4 different patterns in a single color. Choose your color scheme, then search for patterns that feature those colors in different ways. In this example, we took blue and gray patterns on the accent chairs, coffee table, and throw pillows and used them throughout the space to create balance.
  • Mix the right patterns. When it comes to accessories like throw pillows and accent chairs, you want to choose a mix of patterns from the four staples:  a floral or paisley print, a geometric print, a striped print, and a solid. Combining each of these patterns in a similar color palette will create visual interest in any space in your home.
  • Stay safe with stripes. Stripes are an interior designers’ secret weapon because they go with everything! Whether it’s floral prints or ikats, geometrics, or even other stripes, a striped pattern is extremely versatile in the world of design. The right stripe can play up the other patterns you choose to incorporate into a room.
  • Use the right pattern in the right place. Certain patterns work well in places other patterns wouldn’t. For instance, textured solids like twill or linen, have more staying power in a room if they’re used on larger pieces or furniture or throw rugs. Geometric prints play nicely on upholstered pieces like accent chairs or ottomans, drapes, and pillows. Floral prints also work great in these areas. Plus, the mix of colors used in a floral print can help inspire other print and color choices you make for a particular space.
