Warm weather means hanging outside. Nobody wants to be holed up indoors anymore, and an outdoor gathering area makes entertaining and hosting more desirable. For those of you that have a deck, this is the perfect space to spruce up and use for outdoor parties. Here are some tips on how to design a deck everyone will want to hang out on:
Make it cozy
First and foremost, you should pick out comfortable outdoor furniture. If you want a space for people to sit around and talk or sip cocktails, consider a sectional. Make sure the fabric is weatherproof but doesn’t compromise on comfort. A wicker base goes perfectly in an outdoor setting. Choose pops of color for the cushions or even white so that it becomes the focal point. You can also place floor pillows around the area for a relaxed vibe. If your deck is smaller and you want the seating area to consist of a table and chairs, an Adirondack set can provide comfort on its own or with cushions placed on the chairs.
Create privacy
In an open yard, you may want to create a faux wall for privacy. You can line potted plants or small trees in a row to shield prying eyes. If you’re not worried about others gazing in, a lattice wall can be a lovely backdrop behind a couch on the edge of the deck. Of course, you can always put up a fence, but greenery or lattice structures add texture and additional elements of style.
Decorate as you would indoors
Just because you’re outside doesn’t mean you can’t hang up artwork or add accessories. Instead of hanging up a painting, look for a sculpture that fits in with the style of your yard. For example, if your deck is designed in a nautical theme, look for an oversized anchor made of driftwood. Throw pillows and blankets are also acceptable. Consider keeping a multifunctional bench seat or ottoman with storage to place these items when there’s bad weather. Candles and greenery are also nice touches when strategically placed around the deck. You can also add an area rug to the space for texture and a pop of color.
Incorporate an outdoor staple
Some things make more sense outside, like a fountain or firepit. Adding a fountain or firepit to your deck can instantly create a focal point and set the mood for relaxation and comfort. Keep in mind, you can find fountains or firepits that are on the smaller side, so you don’t have to give up this dream if you lack space.
Offer areas of shade
Sometimes people may want to escape from the sun and cool off for a little bit. Umbrellas, pergolas, and awnings are great options for providing shade. If you have a table and chairs out there, an umbrella is a must and a simple solution for blocking out the UV rays. To cover a larger space, you’ll need to consider a pergola or awning. If you have an area in your yard with large trees, consider hanging a hammock or creating additional seating there since the trees give natural shade.
Install lighting
When your party lasts well beyond the sunset, you’re going to need lighting! If you have a fence surrounding your deck, add solar lights to the trim. You won’t have to worry about plugging them in, and you are saving energy. You can also hang string lights around the deck if you have the space to do so. Also, consider tiki torches or lanterns.
Level up
Your deck may already be elevated, which is great for adding dimension. If there is space underneath the deck, think about hanging a bench swing. It’s a great place to sit and chat with a friend or read a book in the shade. If you have a patio, consider adding a slightly elevated deck (maybe two steps up). This will make your yard appear to have multiple rooms and areas for entertaining.
