Are you in the market for a home renovation? Whether you’ve just moved in or you’ve lived in the same place for the last 15 years, decorating your home can seem overwhelming if you don’t have an action plan. Sure, you get to go shopping, test color swatches and fabric feels to design the room of your dreams, but sometimes it’s hard to get started on that brainstorming process. What’s the first step?
Start with what you have.
Look around your home and take inventory of what you already own. Are there pieces that you don’t want to part with? Is there anything that comes with an interesting story and can serve as a focal point? If you have items that are going to transition into the updated space, use them as a jumping off point for your decorating. Consider the textures, colors, and design styles these items showcase. Then, base wall color, light fixtures, and accessories like throw pillows and rugs, around those elements you’re keeping.
Find more inspiration and create a vision board.
Whether it’s a physical board or a virtual one on Pinterest is up to you, but start to save photos of home decor that speaks to you. Cover every aspect of decorating from colors to room layouts, furniture, and accessories. This will help you figure out what decor style matches your personality. Do you vibe with the Modern style or are you more Contemporary? Perhaps you prefer a more Rustic feel or something a bit more Nautical. No matter what style you’re after, having one in mind will be helpful when you start the shopping process, too.
Consider the current state of the space.
Where you start in the decorating process depends heavily on the current situation in the space you want to decorate. For instance, in some rooms, you might choose your color palette first and choose other decorative elements around that color scheme. In other rooms, there may be a physical object that you’re going to design around. For example, you may have a colorful area rug in your living room. You can pull from that and decide on the color palette for the rest of the space. In the bedroom, choose your bedding first. This will set the tone for the rest of the items in the room.
Regardless of what room you’re looking to update, don’t consider all of the steps in the process. Start with a simple choice first, like the wall color or the texture of the carpet, then build on your design choices from there. For more help with your home decorating, contact Carmen Mackey.
