Strengthening the Human-Nature Connection Through Interior Design

Get rid of your separation from nature. Our homes are our sanctuary and reflect our lifestyles. So why not bring nature back into your everyday life?

The world around us is continuously changing, and as we continue to develop science and technology, our connection to nature becomes less and less. Here are a few tips to strengthen the human-nature connection starting in your home.

Colors of Nature

One way to bring the feel of nature into your home is to bring in mother nature’s color palette. You can easily do this with taupe’s, greys, and sage green colors.

However, it does not stop there. Try taking a picture from your favorite vacation spot and pulling color inspiration.

For example – say you were in Hawaii last summer and you loved how it made you feel. Take the blues/greens from the water, the color of the sand, and all the colors you see in the sunset. Together these colors make the perfect color palette for a warm and inviting room.

Best of all, it brings something you love into your most personal space.

Living Walls

Living walls are a fairly new design trend. However, they have an abundance of benefits including breathing fresh oxygen right back into your space. They can mimic a piece of art, fill up an entire wall, and add tons of color to your space.

There are also other benefits such as climate control, noise reduction, and are proven to increase productivity.

Plants absorb 45-50% of sunlight, which in return gives you a cooler climate inside. Try adding them in rooms that get too much sun.

Plants also soak up the sound in your house. This can be a great solution for big spaces with an echo.

Adding any type of plant to your home is proven to increase the level of productivity and have a positive impact on your brain. Living walls have been proven to increase productivity by almost 20%! This is great for a world where we are all working out of our homes right now.

Big Open Windows

It is no secret that windows have benefits for our psyche. To start, windows let in lots of sun and more sun means more vitamin D (and we can all use some of that!). Windows also add a straight vision to the outside, and you can use this to your advantage.

A trick to drawing your eye to a window in a space is to add window treatments. It is a myth that adding window treatments takes away from your windows and can do the exact opposite if done correctly.

Use Stones and Other Natural Elements for Accessories

Another great way to bring natural elements into your space is to mimic things you would find outside. Such as – rocks, wood elements, and greenery. For example, crystals are a great accent piece and can be displayed in multiple different ways. Small plants are also a great filler for bookcases and fireplace mantles.

Do not be afraid to use things you have picked up from your travels. These can add a great sense of the outside world and bring nature in. Pro tip: Next time you are at the beach, pick up a cup of sand that you can display in a vase or bowl on your bookshelf. Now you have something sentimental that you brought in from nature!
